Obesity is a term that refers to an individual as having too much body fat. Bariatrics medicine focuses on prevention, causes, and treatments for obesity. There are many health risks associated with obesity, and doctors use a variety of treatments to help a bariatric patient lose weight and keep the weight off. During this time, an individual living with obesity may benefit from a mobility device. A bariatric electric wheelchair can assist bariatric patients living with obesity and help individuals remain mobile and enhance their quality of life during the course of treatment.

The Risks of Living with Obesity

Doctors use the Body Mass Index, or BMI, to determine if someone is overweight or obese. The BMI scale takes a person's weight in kilograms and divides it by height in meters. A BMI between 25 and 30 is considered in the overweight range. Anything higher than 30 is considered obese.

An individual living with obesity is at a greater risk for health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, gout, breathing problems, heart disease and more. Although not everyone is at risk for these complications, the risk is generally higher for people who already have a family history of any of these issues.

Many factors can cause obesity. Obesity can happen over time as a person consumes more calories than the body needs. The balance of calories varies by each person, and additional factors can affect weight, including foods high in fat content, not getting enough exercise, overeating, and genetics. Additional factors that can contribute to obesity include eating disorders, hormonal issues, sleeping problems and metabolic abnormalities. Discover more information on obesity and bariatrics.

Treating Obesity

When an individual is living with obesity, the goal is to help the person reach and maintain a healthy weight. A team of doctors, including a dietician, can help the person change their eating habits. Through diet changes, weight loss may be gradual, and the first goal to achieve is for the individual to lose approximately three to five percent of his or her body weight. Other forms of treatment include weight loss medications, behavior changes, exercising, and bariatric surgery.
