If your child is born with a medical condition such as cerebral palsy or spina bifida, their mobility may be affected. Pediatric power wheelchairs from Quantum® are designed to provide kids with the support and mobility they need to live a full and busy life. There are many pediatric power chairs on the market, so the decision can be difficult. Which power chair is right for your child? Your child’s medical condition determines which pediatric power wheelchair is best suited for him or her.
The Kozmo® Wheelchair is a pediatric power wheelchair that appeals to kids with its fun colors and compact size. With a maximum speed of up to 3.6 mph, your child can keep up with his or her friends. A compact turning radius of 25.45 inches allows your child to maneuver this pediatric power wheelchair into kid-sized spaces. The Kozmo is available in six color options, including Ruby Red, Sapphire Blue, Rose Quartz, Citrine Yellow, Amber Orange, and Pearl White. Your child can choose the color that best matches their personality! The pediatric height-adjustable footplate allows the chair to grow with your child. The Kozmo is also available in a more portable option, called the Kozmo® Portable, a pediatric power chair that easily disassembles into four pieces for simple transport.
If your child has Medicare, they may qualify for a pediatric power wheelchair through Medicare if the power chair is deemed medically necessary. To find out if your child qualifies, schedule a face-to-face exam with his or her physician or physical therapist. During the evaluation, the doctor must first consider whether a cane, walker, manual wheelchair or scooter benefits your child before considering a power wheelchair. If they deem an electric wheelchair to be necessary, the doctor writes a prescription for the chair. Have the doctor fax the prescription and your child’s medical records faxed to a local authorized Quantum® provider. All the paperwork must be received within 45 days of the face-to-face evaluation. The provider works with your child’s clinician to determine which pediatric power wheelchair is best. Learn more about Medicare pediatric power wheelchairs.
If your child has Medicaid, power wheelchairs can be covered as Durable Medical Equipment (DME), however, eligibility standards vary from one state to the next. To qualify for Medicaid, an individual must meet income and resource limits, be medically needy or fall into a state-specified eligibility category. Medicaid only pays for a pediatric power wheelchair if the child has a medical need for the wheelchair. There must also be a doctor’s prescription written for the child, as well as an explanation as to what kind of power wheelchair the child needs.
